To accommodate the growing demand for air travel, Suvarnabhumi Airport is undergoing a major expansion project that includes the construction of a third runway.
The new runway is expected to increase the airport’s capacity by 30%, allowing it to handle up to 100 million passengers per year.
The expansion is expected to elevate the airport’s flight handling capacity from 67 flights per hour to 94, a crucial step towards bolstering Thailand‘s status as a key aviation hub in the region.
The third runway is scheduled to be completed and operational by July 2023. Once completed, it will be the longest runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport, measuring 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) in length. The project also includes the construction of a new taxiway, a new apron, and additional passenger facilities.
The third runway, located to the east of the current runways, will come with its own passenger terminal and other airport facilities.
Aligned with the goal of enhancing its amenities and offerings, the airport recently marked the inauguration of the Satellite 1 (SAT-1) passenger terminal. This advancement has already begun to yield favorable results, as 13 airlines are currently utilizing the new facility.
The introduction of the SAT-1 terminal has significantly contributed to the increase in flight operations at Suvarnabhumi, with the daily number of flights serviced by the new terminal rising to 86. Officials said this figure is projected to climb to 112 flights per day by the end of the month, highlighting the successful integration of the new facility into the airport’s overall operations.
