The “Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024” opened today in Bangkok with a grand cultural spectacle showcasing Thai traditions and historical significance from all regions of the country. Over 1,000 performers participated in the one-kilometre stretch parade with 20 grand processions, celebrating the time-honored traditions of Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year festival listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Processions and Festivities
The parade was led by the Procession of the Golden Buddha image and the Maha Songkran Procession, featuring the Nang Songkran goddess of 2024 – Mahodhara Devi. Additionally, various provinces showcased their unique traditions and festivals, adding to the vibrancy and cultural diversity of the event.
Main Event Highlights
The ceremony will continue for five days at Sanam Luang, featuring cultural and musical performances, traditional Thai activities, and the promotion of Thai soft power through various showcases and displays. Visitors can also engage in environmentally sustainable practices through initiatives like plastic waste management and upcycling activities, ensuring a memorable and eco-friendly festival experience.
