The “Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024″ extravaganza is set to take place from 11-15 April in Bangkok, showcasing the rich culture and tradition of Thai soft power. The event is a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Interior, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The festival aims to celebrate Songkran, Thailand‘s traditional New Year festival, and promote Thai cultural heritage on a global scale.
Cultural and Traditional Showcases
Culture Minister Mr. Sermsak Pongpanit highlighted the significance of supporting the Songkran celebrations in Bangkok and five other locations to celebrate Thailand‘s UNESCO ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage‘ status. The appointment of Miss Antonia Porsild as the Nang Songkran goddess of 2024 and the launch of Songkran songs in multiple languages aim to enhance global awareness of the festival’s cultural heritage. The festival will feature grand processions, performances, and traditions from various regions, illustrating the diversity of Thai culture.
Promoting Thai Soft Power
Minister of Tourism and Sports, Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting Thai soft power through festivals like Songkran. The “Maha Songkran Parade” will feature over 20 grand processions with more than 1,000 performers, creating a memorable experience for visitors. TAT Governor, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, highlighted the festival’s global reach through broadcasts on international platforms and the involvement of celebrities and influencers. The festival aims to inspire travel and tourism activities, contributing to an increase in overall revenue and visitor arrivals.
The rebranding of Songkran as the “Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024” marks a significant step towards showcasing Thailand’s cultural heritage and soft power on a global stage.
