How to Celebrate Your Employee’s Retirement

The number of those who choose to retire is going up every single day. Did you know that 10,000 people in the Boomer generation are retiring daily right now? That’s a lot of people and there’s every chance that some of those are going to be working in your business right now.

As a business leader, it’s up to you to ensure that you recognise the people working for you and sometimes, that means a shindig to wave them off into their best years.

If you have people retiring to Thailand this year in your company, then making a point of showing your retiree you’re grateful for their service is important. You are the person who drives change in your business and you’re also the one who elevates everyone who works for you. When you have someone stay with you long enough to retire, it’s a privilege that you get to celebrate with them. With that in mind, here’s how to do it in style:

  1. Honor their accomplishments. One of the best ways to send off your retiree is to honor what they’ve achieved while in tenure with your business.
From glass trophies to medallions, you can buy a physical prop to celebrate their achievements in your business. It’s classy to show your employee that you appreciate everything they’ve done for you because while there are plenty of ways to do it, there’s nothing better than a verbal recognition of a lifetime of hard work. A toast of champagne (the real stuff) and a memento for them to take away is the minimum, but you need some speeches from their colleagues, too.
  2. Pick a party theme. You cannot just allow a retiree to go quietly away from your business, it’s important that you tell the world exactly what they’ve managed to do while in your business, so throwing a party is a great idea.
You need to pick a party theme and you should book a day of work to be able to host this party so that it’s an all day event. If somebody’s giving you years of their life to be able to work for you and do good for your business, then you can give them one day whether you make it a relaxation party where you seem it with the beach or you decide to let everybody come with you to a local restaurant for an extended lunch and drinks. You need to make sure that you have a party for the person who is leaving. They deserve every second of one.
  3. Don’t forget the cake. At any party, the cutting of the cake is a moment that everybody anticipates and drools over. It should taste as good as it looks, so make sure that you have a cake that’s themed to the retiree.
Somebody who’s looking forward to traveling will then make sure that the cake reflects that. Also, try to figure out what their favorite flavor of cake would be before the party happens, because you want them to have a cake they’re going to enjoy. Take into account any dietary requirements and medical requirements as well
  4. Order party favors. A party for your retiree is supposed to be fun, but there’s nothing better than having party favors at the end. You need to be able to show some appreciation for all of your employees with your retiree front and center. Don’t forget that this is their party. So also do a whip around for a gift so that everybody can chip in. But as the employer, you should be making sure that you have a budget for gifts at the end of retirement.
Sometimes it can be in the form of a plaque or it can be in the form of a watch. If you know that the retiree is heading around the world for traveling then get some travelers cheques or figure out what their plans are and give them some foreign currency. Doing this allows you to show that you care about them as a person and the rest of your employees will be watching how you handle this time.
  5. Play some music. There are so many retirement party songs that can fit the mood of a party event for a retiree. Songs about relief, nostalgia, freedom and happiness are all important. They’re leaving your business and it’s a celebratory thing because yes, your business is great, but now they get their time back after putting in so much hard work over the years.
