Khao Kheow Open Zoo has responded to claims from a TikTok user alleging that they are keeping the two-month-old pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, in captivity against her will. The zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoi, reaffirmed that the facility adheres to international standards, focusing on conservation, research, education, and guest enjoyment.
To support wildlife preservation, the zoo breeds and returns animals to their natural habitats. Recent releases include sarus cranes and black-necked storks, demonstrating their commitment to conservation efforts.
Moo Deng’s keeper, P’Benz, addressed criticism about their interaction, stating that zookeepers undergo regular training on animal welfare. Additionally, the zoo plans to trademark Moo Deng’s name and has reported a significant increase in visitor numbers, attributed to her newfound fame.
