Prime Minister wants weekly meetings with central bank governor to discuss economic situation, inflation, interest rates and digital wallet scheme.
Prime Minister’s Proposal for Weekly Meetings with Bank of Thailand Governor
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has put forward the suggestion of holding weekly meetings with Bank of Thailand Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput. This proposal comes after the two of them met at Government House to discuss various economic aspects including the general economic situation, inflation, interest rates, and the “digital wallet” scheme.
Disagreement Over Central Bank’s Policy Rate Increase
The prime minister expressed disagreement with the central bank’s decision to increase the policy rate, citing a contrast with the steady decline in inflation. The central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee had unexpectedly raised the policy rate to 2.50% in September last year, which was reconfirmed in November.
Clearing Misunderstandings and Future Meetings
The prime minister stated that the meeting helped in increasing understanding of each other’s roles. He emphasized that he did not intervene in the central bank’s affairs or issue any orders to the governor. He also expressed the desire to have more regular meetings, possibly on a weekly basis, with the central bank governor to avoid any criticism of pressure application.
